I’m slightly perplexed by all of the uproar about Miley Cyrus’ performance at the VMAs a couple of nights ago. We live in a sex-infiltrated society with movies, tv shows, and music encouraging promiscuity, yet when a “good girl goes bad” everyone is in shock. I’m shocked that this doesn’t happen more often. Why are people not concerned with the lyrics to Selena Gomez’s song “Come and Get It” which won big and is sung by teens and preteens on a daily basis? Or that Lady Gaga was wearing next to nothing during her performance? The fact that 10.1 people were even watching the VMAs show what we value as a society. We do need to draw lines about what is socially acceptable, but I think we’re going about it all wrong. Target the appropriate place – not an individual but the culture at large.
